Kauai Update, Part II - What We Saw

Dear Friends and Family,

First a quick update. I broke my retainer AGAIN this morning. I figured on average about once a year. But, I took time off in April this year to get that puppy fixed, and now it's broke again. Last time, it was Austin spring break, so I needed to wait two weeks before going down to get it fixed. This upcoming weekend is Austin City Limits. So, it looks like it'll be another long wait. Pain in the neck...

What We Saw

Tuesday, we changed on the plane, landed in the airport, picked up the rental car and headed to the beach! Since it was almost 5 pm, we risked passing on the sunscreen. Poipu Beach is on the south side of the island, a quick 15 minute drive from Lihue Airport. Actually, there are two beaches on the map labeled Poipu. We went to the east-ish one Tuesday night. We got there with about 40 minutes to sunset. The water was warm and we promptly went for a swim. The surf is manageable for your average swimmer. Mr. mouse thought it was the perfect level of surf. Also, no rocks or coral under foot, so you don't have to watch where you're stepping. We watched the moon rise and the sunset and then headed out for pick up supplies and dinner.

Poipu Beach moon rise
Poipu Beach sun set
Wednesday, we slept in. It was a drizzly day, so we didn't feel guilty about it. Actually, we never really feel guilty about sleeping in. It's vacation, after all. We headed out to Waimea Canyon - Hawaii's version of the Grand Canyon. We weren't sure what we'd find, since it was overcast. The weather changes by the hour and is pretty different on the four coasts, so we figured we had nothing to lose by trying. It's about 2.5 hours to get from our hotel to Waimea Canyon - pretty much the two furthest points on the island. It was drizzly on the drive up the mountain and on-and-off drizzle during our 1 mile "hike" to the look-out point.

Waimea Canyon
Well, the canyon was filled with fog and mist. And, you couldn't see more than a foot or two in front of you... But, it was otherworldly. We had the entire place to ourselves since no other freaks felt the need to hang out on a cold clammy mountaintop when the sunny beach beckoned. But, we did. And, we were richly rewarded for it. A strong wind started blowing from the south, and the fog and mist parted. It was like it was out of a movie. And, Napali Coast and the Canyon appeared before our very eyes. It was so beautiful with the lingering edges of mist hanging onto the mountains. Pictures can't do it justice, you had to be there. Oh, I forgot, NO ONE was there, but us. Okay, I guess you'll just have to trust me on this one. It was awe inspiring.

Napali Coast
Napali Coast
Then, the winds started blowing from the ocean again, and the mist crept back into the valley. It was as if it was a special gift just for the two of us for a brief moment in time.

Waimea Canyon
We "hiked" back to the car and headed down the mountain. Halfway down, we stopped at a scenic overlook we skipped on the way up (it was pouring rain) and got to see the more classic view of Waimea Canyon with the red rock. Mr. mouse felt like the trip was complete after that. Me? I was completely satisfied after the trip to the top, so the red rock view was an added bonus.

Waimea Canyon
It all worked out perfectly, but for others planning on heading out to Kauai, I'd recommend saving this for the last day. You're in the car and walking at high altitude, so you're not getting particularly dirty or sweaty. It would work well for boarding an afternoon plane vs. being covered in sunscreen, salt and sand. We managed, but, just remarking for y'all...

Thursday... Oh, Thursday... I wanted to head over to a beach called Queen's Bath. It's not really a beach since there's no sand. It's an area on the north side with lots of lava rocks. Some of the rocks form a natural basin that fills with ocean water. During low tide, it's swimmable. I was intrigued by the idea since we had seen a similar concept on a smaller scale in Hilo when we went out last year for my cousin's wedding. Well, the scale of it was completely different... man made vs. Mother Nature... who knew?

Queen's Bath
The hike down to the pool took a good 40 minutes through some slick red mud, but we managed well considering we weren't planning on hiking. And, then there's a fairly long trek through aa (Hawaiian for lava rock). I wouldn't call them boulders, but, definitely not a paved path. I'll see if I have any photos I can include, so you get the idea.

Queen's Bath
The pool is down about 10 feet from the level the rocks are at. So, we found a stop with some shimmy-able stones... I was more concerned about my ability to get back up the stones, but that turned out to be a non-issue. The water was too rough to really do any swimming in. I was able to spend about 2 minutes in it, but was constantly battling the tides to avoid getting smashed against the basin. And, Mr. mouse didn't venture in.

Queen's Bath
Still, the excursion was worth it. Queen's Bath is beautiful, and we were planning on a hike that day anyway. So, it worked well to combine the two into one activity. I wish we had brought a picnic basket for lunch, it would have been a perfect spot for it.

Queen's BathIn the afternoon, we headed out to Kee Beach. There's some gorgeous views from there to the west. We found a spot with enough shade for me and enough sun for Mr. mouse. The water was good, but the preponderance of snorkels warned us that there would be lots of coral. Yep. There was. Great for snorkeling, less than optimal for body surfing. Still jumped the waves and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. We also had time for a rousing game of Scrabble. I bingoed on reneges and Mr. mouse got even with insides. Fun. Fun.

Kee Beach
For sunset, we headed back to Hanalei Bay. The sand there is to die for. There's no tide whatsoever, since it's in a protected bay. We didn't go in the water, so I can't vouch for water quality, always something I check out when there are boats docked nearby. Sometimes it's fine sometimes it feels like I'm swimming in the East River. Oh wait, that's fine now too. Well, you know what I mean. Back to Hanalei... There were two outriggers racing in the bay. It was fun to watch. And, there was a person doing sunset yoga finding her inner peace. And, lots of couples sitting in the sand just passing the time. We sat and gazed at Mr. Sun as he made he way across the sky. A nice ending to the day.

Hanalei Bay
Friday, our last day. We headed south again to the second of the two Poipu beaches, the west-ish one of the two. It's located right outside the Sheraton and also known as Kiahuna Beach. Lots of fun in the sun. The south side gets half the rain the north side does, so it's not as green.

Kaihuna Beach
We watched a couple. She had on a cute bikini, cute matching hat and cute sunglasses. She had a disposable camera. He had two fins that didn't fit, a brand new boogie board rented from Snorkel Bob's and a determined look on his face. We busted out laughing watching him go out time and time again while she waited for the perfect shot.

Kaihuna Beach
The sand was fine. The surf was even finer. It was perfect for me. There's also a sharp drop off, so you can jump the waves and not worry about constantly hitting the ground. Mr. mouse stayed closer to shore, but bodysurfed with the best of them. There were a couple of local kids enjoying the water, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're comfortable in the water. It bested me once or twice when I had my back turned.

Kaihuna Beach
We headed back to the hotel for a quick dip in the pool, some quiet time on the beach and most importantly to return our beach towels, rinse off in the shower stands and pick up our bags. Well, as luck would have it, there were two hammocks on the beach and one opened up while we were there. We nearly ran (discretely, of course) to ensure we got it before anyone else did. No problem. So, we took turns rinsing off and lying in the hammock. The view... sigh... I'll miss it.

Kauai
Then, we headed back to the airport and our flight home.

Cheers!

PS: We're such geeks. Mr. mouse is tagging/uploading all the photos to flickr and I'm blogging. Time for bed.

Kauai Update, Part I - What We Ate

Dear Friends and Family,

We're back. Wow! Boy, did I need a vacation badly.

Mr. mouse is taking a nap, so I figured now is as good a time as any to start the vacation recap. We took the week off and headed out to Kauai, Hawaii. More on this later.

What We Ate

I refuse to eat at the hotel when traveling in Hawaii. There's too much good food at great prices to justify not taking advantage of the deals. Hawaii wouldn't be complete, for me, without POG, spam musubi and Korean plate lunches.

Ramen Hawaiian Style = Saimin. It's a noodle based soup dish, meat broth, toppings ranging from pork and scallions (for me) to scallions, pork, fish cake, veggies, boiled egg, and other unidentified bits (for Mr. mouse would got the house special). We hit Hamura's Saimin Tuesday night. Dinner for two was under $20, including a stick of chicken teriyaki. There was one other obvious tourist couple (too pale to be local) and a bunch of locals chowing down on the yummy soup. It was my first time, but definitely one to add to the roster going forward.

Saimin Noodles

Orange Juice Hawaiian Style = POG. POG stands for Passion Fruit - Orange - Guava. It's my morning juice when on the islands. I don't normally have juice with breakfast, but I can't resist POG. We picked up a quart every night and I had two glasses each morning. We found it in a can, so I brought home two 6 packs. I'll have to space it out to make it last.

Hawaiian POGWe stopped by a sandwich/smoothie hut on Wednesday. Mango Mama's specializes in organic foods. We picked up a turkey sandwich loaded with greens, tomatoes, onions and sprouts. Yum. Yum. And, we got two bananas. The bananas on Hawaii are half the size of bananas on the mainland. They've got another name... strawberry bananas? apple bananas? something like that... They're tangier and sweeter at the same time. So good. They were out of hummus, so we stopped by the supermarket for the second half of lunch.

Sashimi Hawaiian Style = Poke. We hit the local Safeway and picked up two containers of rice and three containers of poke. Poke is raw fish marinated in spices, soy sauce and herbs. We got some ahi poke, salmon poke and octopus. The octopus is cooked, but the concept is the same. My favorite was the salmon. Again, full meal for two, under $20. Nice.

ahi poke
Korean barbecue Hawaiian Style = plate lunch/dinner. This is a points buster, but we made it work by eating only half of it for dinner and saving the other half for lunch. It's Korean barbecue modified a little but still recognizable as Korean. But, what you'd expect from a lunch truck, not a restaurant. What's really different is the proportions. Double the rice, triple the meat and an infinitesimal portion of veggies. For some reason, a scoop of macaroni salad gets added on the side. Go figure. We stuck the leftover meat in a baguette we picked up at Safeway. Alone, right around ~$20 for two. Once you amortize over two meals, well south of $20.

Korean Barbecue Plate Dinner
Thursday night, we tried something new for dinner. We went Polynesian Cafe. Their slogan is gourmet food, paper plate. It was packed, so we took it as a good sign. I ordered the ahi sandwich and Mr. mouse ordered the Kalua pork Po Boy. My sandwich was heavenly. The fish was cooked just right and the bread and sauce complemented the fish without overpowering it. Mr. mouse's sandwich was great as well. The pork had the smokiness imparted from being cooked luau style. Another great meal for under $20.

ahi sandwich
Snow cone Hawaiian Style = Shave Ice. We had to try it after seeing so many signs for it and reading about it in the guide books. So, after dinner, Thursday, we got one to share. It's literally ice that's shaved from a gigantic block using a shave ice machine. Then, it's flavored with syrups. We got cherry lime. And, for giggles, we had it topped with condensed milk. It's rich. It's sickeningly sweet. It's huge. It'd be a 10 year old's dream come true. I had a couple of spoonfuls, but let Mr. mouse have most of it. The sugar rush that late at night would have sent me into orbit. But, it's part of the experience, so we had to try it.

Hawaiian shave ice
Friday lunch and dinner were very simple affairs. We picked up some sliced turkey at Safeway, used the second half of our baguette and made sandwiches. We also got some pre-sliced pineapple. ABC supplied the rest of Friday's food finds. We got 2 Chinese buns, one with char siu, Chinese barbecue pork, and one with lap cheong, Chinese sausage. Which brings us to the last, but not least, saving the best for last, food entry. Spam musubi. I grew up on Spam. I grew up on rice. Spam musubi is rice topped with spam. How can life be any more perfect? A trip to Hawaii wouldn't be complete without it. All of Friday for less than $20.

Spam Musubi
Okay, I hear Mr. mouse stirring, so I'll continue later.

Cheers!

Quick Note

Dear Friends and Family,

Gotta run to my one meeting today. Then, I'll be maintaining radio silence for the next week.

Our neighbors are coming to visit us at the mouse pad. Then, we're headed on vacation for a week.

Where? Only the shadow knows.

Mole Hills Round III

Dear Friends and Family,

You remember last week's drama on Thursday?

We had a close call on Sunday when the flights back from Seattle filled up. Mr. mouse bought a one way ticket at the last minute as an insurance policy to getting home. Fun. Fun. Fun. We made it home, barely. We got the last two seats on the first leg. And, made the second leg by 2 seconds, literally.

Well, hoping to avoid all of that AND more importantly all of the drama associated with it all, we actually BOUGHT a ticket for yesterday morning's flight. Wouldn't you know it, the flight gets delayed for over an hour due to mechanicals. And, the words out of my dear colleague's mouth?

"That's unacceptable."

I could have screamed. Don't get me wrong, I felt bad about it all. I really did. Ask Mr. mouse. He saw me running frantically from gate to gate before coming back to my original gate and collapsing in a pile of tears.

What got me was that she was upset at the lack of commitment from the overall team - another person bagged on the meeting. And, she was in a rush to go on vacation herself. So why take it out on me? Because I'm available? We need a "#$%@! happens" t-shirt for her. We really do.

What I've come to realize is that she can be a control freak. Everyone must be in their spot at every moment, because at any moment she might need to ask them something. Any moment someone is somewhere else is a moment they're not accessible to "move the ball forward."

Hello. Some of us have a life outside of work. And, if I had a sick kid? Would that be unacceptable? Would that be a "lifestyle choice" that I would need to have a bullet-proof plan for? Come to think of it, I can still scream prettily easily about it. It just ticks me off to no end.

The poison associated with my current work can't be good for my health. So, here's my resolve.

September 18th. I'll be back from vacation. I'll have a week to do the pile of errands that will crop up. And, then, I will focus renewed energy on a new job for mouse. Something not in this group. I'll miss Frenchie, but it's time for a change.

September 18th. I'm finally ready.

Fast Food Nation

Dear Friends and Family,

Recently, it seems like I've been living at the airport. Maybe, because I have. Wednesday, I came out to see Mr. mouse. Thursday, I went back. Friday, I left for Seattle but only made it as far as Denver. Saturday, Seattle. Sunday, back home. Monday, out to see Mr. mouse. Tuesday: a blissful birthday break. Wednesday, back home.

All this flying inevitably means I'm eating at the airport sometimes. And, the food options at the airport. Tricky, tricky, tricky... So, what's my game plan? Option 1, plan ahead, eat ahead. But, let's say that fails miserably...

Sushi

It's a lot more common at airports now than when you and I were growing up. Mostly, made ahead rolls of decent quality. Each piece is ~1/2 point. most containers range from 9 - 12 pieces. 9 pieces = 4 Weight Watchers points, 12 pieces = 6 points. The soy sauce, wasabi and ginger, all free.

Subway

Another good option, is Subway. Their turkey breast, ham, turkey breast and ham subs. 6" sub on white or wheat without cheese or mayo are 5 points each. Add a bag of Lays Baked Chips (original) for another 2 points. Meal in a bag.

McDonald's or Burger King

The last resort. But, it happens. Friday night, I had a Whopper Jr. no mayo no cheese. 6 points. And, a side salad, no dressing, no croutons. 0 points. Most people don't take their salad so extreme. I actually prefer it that way.

Gotta run. It's time to fly.

Happy Birthday, Mouse

Dear Friends and Family,

It's my birthday :)

I came out and stayed with Mr. mouse.

Big day ahead of us today. Going to the salon for some new eyebrows. Then, headed out for some new shoes and a new "interview" suit. My old one magically turned into a potato sack. Then, over to the store to get a new cell phone.

Then... drum roll, please...

King Tut
We're off to see the King Tut Exhibit at the Field Museum. I can't wait! I'm a huge Egyptology fan - fourth to sixth grade, it was my absolute obsession.

Dinner to follow and maybe Hot Chocolate for dessert.

A bunch of little chores as well: call our neighbor to get the contact for roof repair (had another incident), finish assembling a chair that needs a drill bit, mail our other neighbor a key, and I'm sure I'm forgetting something...

Now, a retrospective on the past year which has gone so quickly. I guess a lot has changed, but a lot has stayed the same. This time last year, we had just sold the "Ranch". In the fall, we bought the "Brownstone". We moved the bulk of our stuff from the "Winter Cabin" to clear up space there. We lost a dear friend and realized another had grown from a boy to a young man. Mr. mouse got promoted. I found my health, or at least I'm well on my way - 10 more pounds to being "normal" on the whole BMI scale. Work is still a debacle, but I've got the time and energy to focus on that now.

I'm sure the year to come will be as exciting, but, all in all, this past year wasn't all that bad either.

Cheers!

PS: Food thoughts either tomorrow or Thursday.

Weekend Update - Mouse Tries Photo Blogging

Dear Friends and Family,

I'm going to try something new today and add a bunch of photos from our weekend. We flew out to Seattle this weekend to see a bunch of our friends.

This is Babo, one of my travel companions. He's an Uglydoll.

We went to brunch with my cousin and her husband to a place called Salty's. Did great points-wise, too, until I compiled my 30 point dessert plate.

We went for a walk on Alki beach. The weather was perfect. And, it helped walk off brunch.

These guys are much better than the ones we saw on Lake Michigan. None of us "get" the socks.

view of downtown Seattle

We met up with some of Mr. mouse's old buddies. Several have moved out to Seattle.

One of them got tickets to the game from work. The seats were great. Row 8 at first base.

The Mariners won 4-3. It was a riveting game.

Afterwards, we headed over to see Mr. mouse' old college roommate. And, their two kids.

#2 just joined us 2 weeks ago. So, Mr. mouse was very eager to go see him.

Happy Monday. Hoped you enjoyed the glimpse into our weekend.

Mountains Out of Mole Hills

Dear Friends and Family,

What an ABSOLUTE debacle yesterday turned out to be.

I went out Wednesday night to meet up with my friend for dinner. We tried a new restaurant a couple of blocks from the house. Yummy yummy to the tummy tummy.

Yesterday morning there was a freak thunderstorm and the airport turned into mass chaos... flights cancelled, flights delayed, runways closed, you name it we had it.

So, I promised a colleague at work that I would take care of some stuff for a meeting we had. And, with the flight disaster, I couldn't. I'll take full ownership of that. My bad.

But, it got so blown out of proportion. It was telling. Me. I would have winged it. Found a way to make it work. My god. How many times have I had to wing it when things don't go my way? But, no, oh the drama. It was ridiculous.

To top it all off, the 30 minute meeting. It was cancelled. So, the actual impact of me being late? Nil.

Wow.

Let's not have more of those days. It's like seeing yourself in the makeup mirror - the close ups sometimes reveal details we're better off not seeing. In others AND in ourselves.

Putting it all behind me, I'm off to the gym this morning. Hopefully, it'll help me find center.

Weather Update

Dear Friends and Family,

Don't ask me why... I feel the need... The need... to report the weather :)

It's raining cats and dogs and frankly elephants, monkeys and small hippos.

It's a solid sheet of water out there, but I'm safe and sound in the mouse house. It feels therapeutic.

sigh...

Mandoo (aka Korean Dumplings)

Dear Friends and Family,

We all have one... the ultimate childhood comfort food.

For me, that's a no-brainer. I love mandoo. They're Korean dumplings. They can be boiled, fried or steamed. My favorite is when you boil them first then lightly pan fry them. I remember making them with my mom and grandma when they both had the time and energy. Now, sadly, we buy pre-made in the frozen food section of the local Asian grocery store.

There's a bewildering array of choices. And, everyone has their preference. Mine is CJ Vegetable and Meat Dumplings. They have noodles inside of them and are a fair to good approximation of the recipe my mom used. Here's a picture of the bag, in case you want to hunt them down.

Mandoo
They keep forever in the freezer. My recent modus operandi has been to have them for dinner on those nights when nothing else appeals to me. I've been having them boiled to save on points. They're an easy to calculate 1 point per dumpling on Weight Watchers. And, I have them with soy sauce mixed with rice vinegar on the side.

Mr. mouse came over last night to pack for our upcoming weekend and to help cheer me up. I didn't sleep well Sunday night or Monday night, so by yesterday I was a wreck. It was good to see him on a week night.

Service interruption alert: I'm headed out tonight to meet a friend for dinner. He's visiting the mouse pad from Michigan where we worked together. So, I probably won't have a chance to write again until Thursday evening/Friday morning, if anyone is checking on a regular basis.

Cheers!

PS: Had a chance to update last week's post with pictures from the restaurant. Enjoy!

Catching Up on Info from Last Night

Dear Friends and Family,

I had grandiose plans for a long post... My old boss left the company and yesterday was the first day without his evil presence at work. But, somehow, I don't care enough to spend the time and energy to write a long post about it. Duly noted: he's gone from my life and I can move on.

Last night, my neighbors had me over for dinner. We went to a local bike shop to pick out a helmet for my noggin. Basically, the protection level is the same across all of them so it's a matter of trying them on for fit. It's like scuba goggles, it's all about fit. And the winner is...

Specialized Air Force Helmet
Specialized Air Force Helmet

We went for a quick "ride" when we got home. Basically, we went to the parking lot a block away and I tried getting on the bike. I came back to me pretty to quickly, at least the basics did. Then, we rode home together. He's a lot faster than I am. A) I haven't figured out gears yet. B) I still get really dicey with corners. C) I get nervous downhill so I apply the brakes more on them. D) He's probably in a lot better shape than I am. But, I'm equipped now. I think I'll try going for a bike ride in the mornings since it's still light out. Not today, today, I have my personal training session. Maybe later this week.

Food. What to write about today? Sorry to let you down. The food post will be coming tomorrow. I need to get ready for the gym. Ugh. Too tired for the gym.

Weekend Update

Dear Friends and Family,

Ahh... A glimpse at what life can be like. Mr. mouse and I had a great weekend - nothing special, blissfully normal.

We slept in Saturday. Then, spent all day cleaning the house from top to bottom. I love a clean house. Mr. mouse also weeded, mowed and watered the lawn. The weather was perfect this weekend - warm, dry and sunny.

Sunday, we slept in again, read the paper, and ran a ton of errands. We dropped off a pair of pants to be tailored. We picked up the latest copy of Norton Anti-Virus. Fortunately for us, Best Buy had a slew of mail-in rebates. Theoretically it'll be free once we complete all of the paperwork.

We baby-sat our neighbor for a couple of hours, but it's not really baby-sitting, it's more like just hanging out together. We made dinner together (pasta, sausage and salad) and watched
Lady and the Tramp.

Sunday night, our financial planner came over to review the quarterly numbers. The good news is we've had great returns on our investments. Yeah! He also outlined what we should attempt to save this year for our retirement. It all still looks reasonable. It finally feels like we're making progress.

TGIF!

Dear Friends and Family,

No central theme here today. Just odds and ends to wrap up for the week.

I met up with Mr. mouse last night. We tried a new restaurant, a Korean dumpling place. We ordered a ton of food with the intent of trying everything. The boiled dumplings were good. The consistency of the skin was just right. But the amount of filling was on the low side. Grandma put in 3X as much filling. The fried dumplings were deep fried... My grandma would boil them first and then lightly pan fry them. And, the red bean paste buns were nicely done. We just didn't have room for more than one apiece. Will add pictures over the weekend, hopefully.

Oops, there goes the timer. Gotta jump into the shower and head out to the dentist.

Home Sweet Home

Dear Friends and Family,

Home again.

Sexy as it may sound to be jet-setting it over to Miami for a day, it's tiring. With the connection in each direction, it's even more tiring. Add travel companions, and, it's good to be home. Not that I don't like either of my colleagues because I do. But, it's still not the same as traveling with Mr. mouse.

Off to work today. Then, off tomorrow for the tooth check. This morning it feels fine. Go figure.

Sorry such a short post, but I'm still exhausted.

100th Blog Milestone

Dear Friends and Family,

This is post #100 according to Blogger. Wow!

I feel the need to talk about something extra special.

Trixie loaned me a book called Maybe Baby, ISBN# 0060737816. And, one of the stories really resonated with me.

There's something I've struggled with over the past year with Mr. mouse. He has THE life. He's got a job he loves at a company he loves. He's been regularly recognized and promoted for his efforts. He took four years to make THE move with the ability to wait for the right opportunity. He lives in a city he loves at a house he loves. He's got a partner he loves (moi!) and friends he really likes too. Overall, what's not to like? Sounds perfect.

Then, there's me. I'm in a job that doesn't fulfill me. It's a dead end job at a company I know I will be leaving. I'm in a house that's for sale living in limbo for the past year. I'm in a city I know I will be leaving with friends I will miss. I have the pressure (internal and external) to make the move as efficiently as possible making me feel like I have a lot less time to find THE right job.

In all, I feel like I have nothing to his everything.

So, where does that leave Baby? Well, he's the one that really wants one and I am still very indifferent. And, I'm always concerned at the sacrifices a child adds. What if I'm the one that ultimately ends up sacrificing more? The statistics say probability runs that way. Baby has a high likelihood to adding to his everything and taking away from my nothing - widening the gap instead of narrowing it.

There's a point to all this... What have I learned by reading? I'm getting older. That's a stat we're not changing. That's a risk I have been and am still willing to take. But, I am going to take my sweet time. I am going to do what I need to do to feel I have something before taking on the endeavor of Baby. And, it's okay. If I use four years as well, and it ends up too late, it's not all my fault. Mr. mouse used four as well, and he's the one who wants one. I'm okay with that.

I'll tell him my new found revelations once I'm back home. He's always supportive of everything. And, really, what choice does he have in the matter? Truly? When it's time, it's time. And, there's no rushing time. And, impatience will only make time go slower. We've certainly not going to attempt Baby if both parties aren't willing to sign on the dotted line.

Switching topics completely, we flew into Fort Lauderdale for another business meeting. We took an earlier flight yesterday which gave us time for a decent dinner. I had crawfish etouffee. Yum! It cost me 17 of my 22 points for the day, but was absolutely worth every point. I'm still savoring it. I'm going to try and sneak in a quick swim this morning.

The tooth? No change from yesterday? I have an appointment Friday to have it looked at.

The ocean beckons.

Pizza, Glorious Pizza

Dear Friends and Family,

pizza collage
Pizza. It's one of my favorite foods. It's also not Weight Watchers friendly. What's a mouse to do? Give up pizza? Never! Let's take the Weight Watchers philosophy back to it's roots. And, see if we can learn more.

Small changes in your life can mean big changes in your weight.

Okay. I can do that. So what qualifies as a small change in pizza? Well let's break a slice down into its core components.
  1. crust
  2. sauce
  3. cheese
  4. toppings
Crust

Basically, the rule here is the thinner the better. Thin crust is best, pan is marginally worse and deep dish is the worst. Don't get me wrong, I love deep dish pizza, but I recognize it's not the healthiest option on the menu.

Sauce

Stick with tomato based sauces. The cream sauces get you. See my pasta topper
post for info on points differences.

Cheese

Quality matters. A little good mozzarella tastes a ton better than lots of bad mozzarella. Stay away from extra cheese and go to a place that has good cheese.

Toppings

Okay. This isn't rocket science here, boys and girls. Meat lovers, bad. Veggie, good. So, I do mushroom, onion, basil, and plain cheese now. And, if I have to have a meat, I go with a single topping, not a combo pack.

So, I guess they are right, small changes can mean big changes over time. Oh, and one last thought, portion control. Have the pizza with a salad or a fruit dessert to make the meal go farther. If you try to fill up on pizza alone, it'll be too "expensive" points-wise.

Weekend Update

Dear Friends and Family,

Another Monday, another weekend update.

Mr. mouse came over Friday night to mow the lawn. We had our neighbors over for wine and movie. We watched
Eight Below. Typical Disney movie, but I was still glad when ***spoiler alert*** the dogs got saved in the end.

Saturday, we braved the airport, to go visit grandma. The lines at the airport weren't bad. We didn't bring any liquids, gels or creams with us, so we didn't attempt luggage check-in. Walked to the gate and boarded the plane. Not much outside of the normal process from what we could tell - the chaos from Thursday and Friday had passed.

We went out to dinner with my parents on Saturday night for my favorite soon tofu. There was a good
article on the wall while we were waiting for a table. Here's a picture of the soup. It's so spicy and creamy and healthy, I'm sure there's a catch somewhere.

soon dubu chigae
Sunday, we headed home to prepare for open house #2. We made sure the house was all "set up" and then headed out to the movies. I won movie passes at work, so we spent the afternoon hugely entertained.
The Devil Wears Prada made both of us laugh so hard. It reminded me of what I love about New York and what I hate about New York.

Sunday night, I got curious as to who was planting cookies on my computer. So, I set the cookies on my computer to manual prompt. OMG! It's ridiculous the number of sites tracking stuff. It was an eye opener. I'm experimenting this week to see what comes of it all. But, if you want to have a look, go to
  1. tools
  2. internet options
  3. privacy
  4. advanced
  5. choose prompt for both options
  6. OK and OK
  7. watch and be horrified
I'm not sure where this all will end, but, I feel marginally better that I'm taking a more active role in all this.

The best part of the weekend? Talking to grandma and seeing that she's doing okay.

Victorious Mouse

Dear Friends and Family,

My friend, let's call her Frenchie, had the team over for dinner last night. She introduced us all to the game of Petanque. It's similar to Bocce but played with metal balls. That's two new games I learned this week.

We split into two teams of three and played a round. Our team won! I get the feeling I'm a little too competitive if I'm still savoring the win this morning.

Afterwards, we had pizza and cake. By the time I got home, my head was spinning from the sugar highs and lows. So, I ate more food - rice and chicken, to try to bring it all back to equilibrium. No more cake for mouse.

On the way home, I decided to spend my remaining $10 on extra gas. That's the only mechanism I have to "bank" money from week to week. So, what's the break-out for the week?
  • $30 gas
  • $9 Target (dishwashing liquid and contact lens solution)
  • $1 copies
  • $11 dinner with Trixie
  • $9 lunch at Applebee's
Voila! Success. Easy as pie.

Satisfied, Sigh

Dear Friends and Family,

Yawn. Good morning. Work is still uber slow. I met up with Trixie last night for a walk and dinner.

We got in about five miles which felt great. I've been getting weights in pretty consistently, but I've been really bad about getting any kind of cardio in. So, last night was a great step in the right direction. Get it? Great step? I crack myself up. The walk was a great opportunity to catch up on everything going on in both our lives.

We went out for Vietnamese afterward. Mmm. I love Vietnamese. It's also very doable on the Weight Watchers routine, unlike Thai, which I've pretty much had to give up since joining. Okay, you don't have to give it up, you can have it in smaller portion sizes. I've done that with Indian. But, Thai, I haven't had the time to sit down and figure it out. The coconut milk in the curry is what kills you. Get it? Kills you? I really crack myself up! So things like Thai Basil Chicken are probably fine. I just haven't done the research yet.

So, the other "thing" I've been trying the last two weeks is going on a sharp budget restriction. Like a weekend fast, it's a way to cleanse, only on the material consumption side instead of the bodily consumption side. I've limited myself to $60 a week and am seeing how I'm doing. That includes all of the day-by-day purchases like gas, groceries, lunches out, etc. It's tough, but, it's definitely doable. I'll do it through the end of August. Then, it'll become more natural, and I won't track it on a week-by-week, dollar-by-dollar basis.

Still thinking about dinner from last night. It was so yummy.

Happy Days

Dear Friends and Family,

Yesterday was fun, fun, fun! We had a company picnic. The weather was perfect - finally! I had a chance to catch up with a really close friend. He makes me feel so special. Maybe that's why we're such good friends.

I learned how to play Bocce. I'm no good at it, yet. I won a couple of prizes: a camera as part of a raffle and a gift card for being on the winning tug of war team. The tug of war was so much fun! I don't think I would have participated pre-Weight Watchers. I don't know if I would have had the confidence. We had a great team and a plan.

My friend won the grill he had been eyeing. It felt like a special day. I needed the break from work.

Last night, I returned Caesar to his family. And, got a chance to catch up with them and see pictures from their trip. Alaska is beautiful. I wanted to go with them on the trip. Too bad work got in the way of fun.

Strawberries Galore

Dear Friends and Family,

Good morning.

Here's a great article on antioxidants.

strawberries
My favorites summer fruit? Last year, I would have said peaches or pineapples. This year, it's been berries, berries and more berries. Strawberries have the added bonus of being "free" on the Weight Watchers point system. For some unknown reason, the first serving (5 oz) of strawberries is 0 points. You can't beat zero when you're looking for "cheap" foods. Five ounces is about five medium strawberries.

They're great plain. They're yummy drizzled with some balsamic vinegar. Add them to cereal. Add them to yogurt. Top a salad with them. Reduce them into a syrup for a nice topper to poultry or fish. Blend them into a smoothie. The ways to get a serving in a day are almost limitless. I confess. I'm a simple kind of person. I eat mine plain, and that's just perfect for me.

What about other berries? Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries... All good for you. Tough to eat 5 oz of any one of them in one sitting. Those are better in handfuls. Do I have a favorite? Tough to say. Blackberries have a sweet nostalgia to them. My grandfather and I used to pick them off a tree that grew in the park near us when I was young. So, they've got sentimental memories associated with them. Blueberries are Mr. mouse's favorites, so they have the shared goodness associated with them. And, raspberries were less interesting until this summer. A couple of friends have raspberry bushes, and the fresh ones. Omigod. They're so good.

In conclusion, you really can't go wrong with any of them. With the rain in the Northeast, there's a bumper crop of high quality affordable berries. Perfect!

Cheers!

PS: Trixie told me about Organic Raisin Bran and Rice Krispies. I'll try them out as soon as I finish my conventional box.

Weekend Update

Dear Friends and Family,

I hope I'm coherent as I try to recap our weekend.

Mr. mouse came over Friday to mow the lawn. We had an open house on Saturday.

In a parallel universe... We had an association barbecue, Saturday, with the neighbors at the mouse pad. I met all of my neighbors for the first time. They were all very cool. I'm glad, as I love all of the neighbors I've had so far. It was funny talking about the renovations everyone has done over the years. They've given me inspiration for our place.

We also had some time after the barbecue to assemble some of the furniture Mr. mouse got on clearance. Namely, we assembled the ottoman and the hammock. We both promptly fell asleep in our respective pieces for a couple of hours. Mr. mouse loves his ottoman and I absolutely LOVE my hammock.

mouse's hammock
We got a call Sunday from one of Mr. mouse's bestest friends. She was in town for a family wedding and wanted to get together. So, we headed out to meet everyone for lunch. Wow! Do kids grow quickly! How does that happen?!?!

Back in this world... The lowlight of Sunday was returning to the mouse house to find... (on second thought, ask me about this one the next time you see me... Frenchie, not in front of the cubicle-mates) WTF?!?! I was so pissed, angry, annoyed, angry, scared, angry, freaked out, angry it ruined my whole night. Thank god nothing happened, but, still, I had a lot of trouble getting settled and falling asleep last night.

So, the agent was pretty glib about the whole thing... Says it sometimes happens. That annoyed me as much as the incident itself. He's gonna get a good talking to later today. I'm on a rampage.

I'll close with a Weight Watchers update. Contrary to all the advice I've read on the boards, I've decided not to force feed myself the extra points. In fact, based on my math, I'm going to try reducing my daily point intake by a single point - which is something like 50 calories. I figure instead of stair-stepping down two points every 25 pounds, I'll stair-step one point every 12.5 pounds. I'll see how this week goes and if it works for me, I think it makes a lot more sense than last week did. The thing that concerns me was everyone writing about your body going in starvation mode and starting to hoard calories. We'll see how this week goes.

Here's to no repeats of last night.

Mouse Blues

Dear Friends and Family,

I took today off to have people come in and work on the house. The carpet cleaner came this morning. It was a huge success. I am waiting on the carpet stretcher. He was supposed to come between 2 and 4. It is now 4:30. Fun.

The other thing on my mind is my appetite has been off this week. I've been force feeding myself to get my daily points in. If this doesn't seem down right ludicrous yet, it gets better. I'm up 3 lbs this week! So, you can only imagine my frustration in forcing food down when I'm not hungry and then watching the scale go up.

I think it's time to step back and think about this. Time to re-evaluate, am I approaching this correctly? Or is it time for some minor adjustments?

Open house tomorrow. No new news otherwise.

Cheers!

Financial Planning Notes (cont'd)

Dear Friends and Family,

I'm taking today off. We have carpet cleaning coming in and I need a break from work. Mr. mouse successfully completed his mission yesterday. Our deck is now completely furnished.

So to continue on yesterday's monologue. I went to an estate planning seminar last Thursday. Estate planning seems to be a fancy word for what happens to your stuff once you're gone.

There are three important considerations:
  • leaving as much as you can
  • to the right people
  • in the right manner
Leaving as Much as You Can

You want to minimize tax and other things if those things are particularly complex in your jurisdiction. Also, there's things people can do (can I be any more vague?) to speed the time it takes to get funds to people. And, there are more things those same people can do to keep some of the records more private so they don't become everyone's business.

To the Right People

Huh? Your heirs, right? Not so simple. Think a step out from that. Your heirs' heirs. These same people can set it up so that you control not only who gets your money, but who they're allowed to pass it on to. Don't ask me how, I don't quite understand that part yet. But, it makes sense.

For example, let's say I die. Mr. mouse gets it all. Okay so far. He'll probably keep it equitable between my folks and his because he's a good guy. Let's assume he does, to draw the example out. Let's say, my folks then croak. What'll he do next? Don't know. Let's say he leaves it all to his dad. It's in the realm of reason. Then, let's say Mr. mouse joins me and it all goes to his dad.

Well, from there it starts to roll downhill. It'll go to his step-mom and then his two step-brothers. And, here I am, a perfectly normal person, going HUH? I'm not sure that's what I want to happen. I'm not working my @$$ off to enrich his step-brothers. How about my siblings? I'm not sure I would want them to get it, but sure as heck they're as entitled as the step-brothers. Mr. mouse would agree, since he's not particularly close to the step-brothers. Better yet, we'd probably both prefer a charity over any of the siblings/step-siblings. So, how to do that...

In the Right Manner

If you're heads not spinning yet. This gets into how much you trust your heirs. Do they need to reach a certain age? Is it a lump sum? Is it an annual stipend? Is it a 1:1 match with their own savings? Is it a 1:1 match with certain expenses? All of the above have pros and cons and someone needs to sort through it and make a decision on how to do it.

Now you know what I know.

Right now, I got more pressing matters. Tea. Yoga. Feed Caesar, the fish. Carpet cleaning.

Financial Planning Notes

Dear Friends and Family,

First off, I had the weirdest dream. I dreamt I was growing taller. I had those dreams a lot when I was a teenager, but I can't say I've had them since. Weird.

I had a chance to catch up with a friend last night and I realized I didn't do justice to the whole financial planning quandary. These are a couple of aspects we're considering:

Fees

One firm charges up front fees of ~3.5% and then there's no incremental charges over the life of the investment, the other charges nothing up front but charges ~1% every year. The up front costs more up front, obviously, but over the life of the investment costs less.

Active Investing

The firm that charges 1% each year takes a much more active role in re-balancing the portfolio every quarter. The 1% pays for research and analysis to optimize everything, so you should end up making it back and more in increased returns. The other firm says its not possible to time the market so in their view you don't get the 1% back in increased returns.

Average Client Size

One firm tells me that my assets are larger than the average assets at the other firms accounts. Their claim is that the other firm won't be able to meet my needs because they're not used to dealing with clients "like me." The other firm claims that my assets aren't large enough for the other firm. Their claim is that the other firm will de-prioritize me because I'm not an important part of their portfolio.

Confused yet? Me too. Like I said, it'll be back burner for the next couple of months, but, just thought I'd share.

Mini Updates from the Mini Suburbs

Dear Friends and Family,

Mr. mouse is headed out tomorrow to pick up the eBay goods. I'll post pictures after the weekend, when, hopefully, we assemble it all.

We've finally had some rain here. It rained a couple of days last week, but yesterday was the first day of steady rain we've had in a long time. Mr. mouse brought over our "rain-luck-charm" so it seems to be working. More rain forecasted for this week :)

Last night, I met with an old friend from school. He's a financial planner now. And, somehow, after speaking with him, I'm considering changing from UBS to Edward Jones. I'm not sure I have a preference between the two brands, but I am forming a preference between the two agents. He's just much better than my current agent at explaining everything and giving good examples. Also, he showed some math as to why his fee structure is a lot more profitable in the long run for us. Once things calm down on the home front, we might consider switching operations. Back burner for now.

And, last, but not least, yesterday, I hit my 30 lb loss mark. Yeah for me!

Chicken Tinga Tacos

Dear Friends and Family,

Chicken Tinga Taco
I tried a new recipe last week that came out pretty good. I was in the mood for something spicy, my cold-deadened taste buds needed it badly... (photo from flickr, not motivated enough to take my own)

Chicken Tinga Tacos

2 tbs peanut oil
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 large tomato, peeled, seeded, diced
2 chipotle peppers, finely chopped
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp nutmeg
12 oz shredded cooked chicken (about 3 cups)
salt and pepper to taste

garnishes
cilantro
finely chopped onion
lime

I modified the cooking approach some. And, based on my first attempt, I would modify it more.
  1. pre-heat oven to 275°
  2. in a medium skillet, heat the oil (I'd use 1 tbs oil in the future, it's plenty)
  3. add onion and garlic and cook over medium heat until softened, 3-5 minutes
  4. add tomato, chipotles, cumin and nutmeg and cook, stirring, ~3 minutes
  5. mouse modification #2: in the future, I would take this mixture and take it off the heat, blend it smooth, and add about 1/4 cup water or chicken stock
  6. add the chicken, cover, seal cover to pan with foil, braise in oven for ~30-45 minutes (Mr. mouse and I have become big fans of braising)
  7. season with salt and pepper
Makes 8 tacos, serves 4.

To serve, plate the tacos and put together an assortment of garnishes. I like cilantro, raw onion and lime. Other ideas are salsa, guacamole and sour cream. I used corn tortillas. Feel free to improvise with wheat tortillas and/or taco shells.

Weight Watchers point information:
  • 3 oz chicken prepared, 6 points
  • 2 medium corn tortillas, 2 points
  • future point savings: 1 point for reducing the oil
  • future point savings: 1 point for all light meat - I used a whole chicken this time
Enjoy :)

Weekend Update

Dear Friends and Family,

Why do weekends go so quickly?

I went out to see Mr. mouse on Friday night. We tried a new Italian restaurant. It was okay. Saturday, I went to get my haircut. And, we scurried back in time to meet Trixie for a baseball game. I had a ton of fun even if we lost.

Sunday, Mr. mouse and I cleaned the house top to bottom. I REALLY love the feeling of a totally clean house. And, in retrospect, it didn't take too long. Maybe, we'll just suck it up and do it each weekend until we find a cleaning service.

My friends are on vacation this week. I'm watching their fish, Caesar. He eats 6 pellets of food each morning. I fed him today. It's fun having him around, but I'm glad I don't have to worry about things like cleaning his bowl, changing his water, etc. I only have to feed him since they're not gone for long.

It's another scorcher today.

Self Activated Mouse

Dear Friends and Family,

Yesterday went by in a blur.

First, we had a large team meeting that consumed the morning. Second, we had a team lunch that consumed the middle of the day. Third, we had a department team building outing that was our afternoon. We went to play mini golf. I had a ton of fun even if it was really warm out.

In the large team meeting, they announced that we would be changing the work environment to one in which the focus is on the work that needs to get done. It introduces options like flexible work hours, tele-commuting, etc. I think it's great for the work environment and am really looking forward to when implementation starts.

Last night, I went to an estate planning dinner. It made me think a lot about what happens to my "stuff" once Mr. mouse and I are history. It also opened my eyes to how wrapped up people get in controlling their stuff once they're long gone. Part of me takes the who-cares-you're-already-dead approach. And, part of me takes the I-want-to-leave-it-specifically-to-specific-loved-ones approach. I'll talk it over with Mr. mouse and see what his thoughts are.

Mr. mouse: Bargain Hunter at Large

Dear Friends and Family,

Mr. mouse has been on a bender of sorts for the last month or so since we got the deck furniture. He's been going to Target and IKEA every night looking at their clearance stuff. Multiple Targets and IKEA multiple nights a week if you get my drift.

Well, this past week, he thought to check eBay, and now he's on an auction bender. I can't wait until it's all done. I'm a little afraid of how much stuff we'll own.

No Pain No Gain

Dear Friends and Family,

Not a lot new today.

I still have the very last remnants of the cold, but feel a ton better. It rained Monday night briefly and was raining last night when I went to sleep. I am very sore from working out yesterday morning with my trainer. I didn't realize taking a week off could make such a difference.

That's about it.

Rooibos Tea (aka Red Tea)

Dear Friends and Family,

Whittard of Chelsea Original Rooibos TeaAnyone who's known me for any length of time probably knows me as a coffee drinker. I had 2-3 cups a day since I was 12. What changed? A couple of years ago, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, which is not as uncommon as it sounds. It's like your body is on an adrenaline rush and everything is going at 120%. The doc told me to lay off the caffeine since it was aggravating the symptoms. So, I made the switch from coffee to non-caffeinated tea.

We "discovered" rooibos tea during our trip to South Africa. Obviously, the tea's been around forever, we just didn't know about it. It's also known as red tea and African tea, and it's not actually a tea at all. It's an herb that's brewed into a tea. The tea brews a dark red and tastes similar to regular tea. I like it because it's naturally decaffeinated, no caffeine to begin with, not chemically decaffeinated. We brought home a huge boxful for under $2, but it's long gone. Now, I buy what's available locally.

I have a mugful every morning instead of my morning coffee.

Not a lot to report today since I had a chance to get online Saturday and Sunday. I weighed in this morning and feel like I've finally broken through the plateau.

I need to go finish some paperwork for the realtor. Then need to eat breakfast and pack lunch. And, if time allows, yoga.

Never Ending Honey Dew List

Dear Friends and Family,

We continue to plug away at the house. I can tell Mr. mouse's frustration is mounting with the never ending list of "stuff" that comes with maintaining a house on the market. His primary frustration today is with the outside stuff. The mowing, the watering, the weeding, the carting of lumber from prior work, the list that never ends.

He's got on his mind that we need a carpet stretcher. Other than that, I think our fix work is done. My big to do this week is to find cleaning service. Then, inside maintenance is taken care of and outside maintenance is all that is left. I can also try cleaning this week - and see if that'll work. Last week was busy with travel and being sick, but this week should be manageable. I'm feeling much better now.

What's our rain tally at? We're at 0.4 inches or 10% of average precipitation for the month. Yeah! How much more fun could we ask for?

I've got some work to do from Friday, so I'm going to go do that while Mr. mouse toils away on the lawn. I think when I offer to help, it just gets him more wound up.

Hope you're all enjoying the weekend more than we are.

Mouse Girlfriends

Dear Friends and Family,

I went out last night with a group of girlfriends from my first job here. It was the funniest night, we ran into two men while we were out - my current boss (their former boss) whom all of us detest and a former colleague we all love. It felt like the night was meant to be.

What I love about the group is the open conversation we can have. We've all had ups and downs and can talk about it with each other. It's tough for me talk about my failures. But, with this group, I can. They're so supportive and non-judgmental. That's why every girl needs her girlfriends.

I'm not sure what future generations will say about the strong women of today, the ones who make life work for them on their own terms. I hope we can be a positive role model for younger women to challenge the stereotypes and truly pursue happiness on their own grounds not expectations set on them by society at large. I hope they're even stronger in their character, goals and dreams than we are. I think that's why I love mentoring, to be able to connect with and support people. Should I become a high school guidance counselor? How cool would that be?

Back to reality. Off to get ready for work.

Air Cooled Mouse

Dear Friends and Family,

Still sick. Debating calling in sick. Have lunch with a close friend otherwise I would definitely call in sick.

I got home around 10 o'clock last night. And, it was suspiciously warm in the house. Looks like the A/C is on the fritz. Mr. mouse will need to look at it this weekend. Thank goodness temperatures have dropped from a couple of days ago and we've got lots of windows in all of the rooms.

Fort Lauderdale was good. Not to sound spoiled, but I've been to better beaches. It was still good nonetheless. A couple of things threw me for a loop - a large freight tanker anchored in the waters and small perch-like fish swimming in the shallow waters. I'll be going back in August for another quick trip. I'm looking forward to it.

Mouse Goes to the Beach

Dear Friends and Family,

Yesterday was a long day, but hopefully, it was worth it. I am in Fort Lauderdale for a business meeting. It doesn't start until 11 o'clock, so a couple of colleagues and I hope to hit the beach this morning for a couple of hours of relaxation.

I'm still feeling pretty sick, but better than yesterday morning. Definitely have a cold which made traveling a bear. Nothing a dip in the Atlantic can't cure.

I love the beach.

Ode to Almonds

Dear Friends and Family,

almonds
What makes almonds so special? Well, the list of "stuff" they're good for almost doesn't seem possible. The antioxidants work on the cancer front. The LDLs work on the cholesterol front and the heart health battle. And, to top it all off, they help with a feeling of fullness, making them a great snack on the weight loss front.

Why the bad rap? Well, they're really nutrient rich, so it's easy to over indulge. Also, until recently, we didn't have a good understanding of fats, so all fats were bad. Now, we're learning some fats are VERY bad and some are actually okay.

What's a good amount? If you have a kitchen scale, 30 grams is a single serving of nuts which is about 24 almonds. I usually have about 15 grams a day since that's already 2 Weight Watchers points. I figure frequency will work in my favor since I have a handful daily.

Happy reading!

Weekend Update

Dear Friends and Family,

We had a busy Saturday followed by a quiet Sunday.

I flew out to see Mr. mouse Friday night. My flight was delayed, so I didn't get in until 10 o'clock. We had two friends staying over Friday night, so we headed out for pizza together. Got back and fell asleep. Saturday, those two friends went out to a baseball game, and we met up with another friend who was also visiting this weekend. We spent the day downtown window shopping and sitting by the lake front. Dropped him off. And, went home to shower. Dinner - went out for Turkish with a THIRD set of friends visiting for the weekend. Anyone see a trend here? Dinner was fabulous. I love trying new food. Several of the dished reminded me of Greek cuisine and Middle Eastern cuisine, but, I guess that's to be expected, considering Turkey's geographical positioning.

Sunday morning we flew back to the mouse house. I got sick and slept through the ENTIRE day, and Mr. mouse did a bunch of errands. I still have the sniffles and a very sore throat. I usually get sick once a month for no particular reason. Maybe this is that. Or, maybe this is the last of my evil karma leaving. Or, maybe it's a plain ole cold.

Hope your week is starting off with a bigger bang than mine.

Thanksgiving in July

Dear Friends and Family,

As I was driving to work yesterday, I realized, for all that I gripe, there's a lot that I am grateful for. Even if it's not Thanksgiving for 4 more months, today, I'd like to take a moment and be thankful for all that has been given to me.

(in no particular order)

I am thankful for a loving spouse who understands me and supports me in all that I try; a roof over my head that shelters me; food that sustains me; parents who tried to raise me to the best of their abilities; friends who make me laugh so hard that I cry; neighbors who are there for me night and day when I need someone close by; jobs that have supported me financially and provided for all of my physical needs; zen that helps me realize the difference between wants and needs; a brain with which to make educated choices and to see the impact my actions have on others; a conscience to care about others; the health of all those close to me; my continuing weight loss and its long term impact on my own health; my grandparents who lived through a war and still raised a family; my sister who tries her hardest to be a good person; and a mentor who told me that all the little things in life are what makes life each day an adventure worth living.

Honesty is the Best Policy

Dear Friends and Family,

Not a whole lot to report from yesterday. Work was really slow - it has been for the whole month of July...

So, why today's title?

Salter Microtronic Kitchen Scale
I bought a kitchen scale a couple of years ago - thinking it would help me with portion control. But, I never really got into the habit of using it. Well, with Weight Watchers, I've become a convert. It keeps me honest.

Plus, it's a lot easier to use than measuring cups. Do you really want to be cleaning measuring cups three times or more daily? For the scale, I put my bowl on it and tare the scale. That's a technical term for setting it to zero. Which is as simple as pressing the button. Then I measure out item #1, say rice. I re-tare the scale and measure out item #2, say vegetables. Tare one more time and measure out item #3, meat. And, I've got a perfectly balanced meal and no extra clean up. It really helped train my eye - so, now, when I'm out, I can guesstimate portions.

The hardest part in all of this is knowing what appropriate portion sizes are. I found them on the FDA website once and abbreviated them for my personal use.

  • dairy (milk: 240 ml/8 fl oz, yogurt: 225 g, cheese: 30 g)
  • protein (fish/meat: 55 g/2 oz, egg: 50 g, tofu: 85 g, nuts: 30 g/1 oz)
  • fruits (dried fruits: 40 g, watermelon: 280 g, all other fruits: 140 g/5 oz)
  • vegetables (fresh or frozen: 85 g/3 oz)
  • starch (bread: 50 g, rice/pasta: 140 g/5 oz)
  • potatoes (french fries/hash browns: 70 g, mashed: 140 g, baked: 110 g)
  • oils: 15 ml/1 tbs
I have a couple of other items, so let me know if there's particulars you've got questions about.

Life in General

Dear Friends and Family,

I've got four pieces to cover today.

The Good

I went out with our agent yesterday evening to look at some comparable houses in our neighborhood. Mr. mouse is calling this morning to settle on an asking price.

I weighed in yesterday morning and hit another major milestone. 25 lbs. Yeah! Here's to breaking through the plateau. And, here's to cereal, water, and yoga.

The Bad

Average month-to-date precipitation for our neighborhood is 4.04 inches. We've had 0.01 inches so far. Will it ever rain?!?! Or am I doomed to a summer of watering flowers, shrubs, and grass? If anyone knows any esoteric rituals that produce rain, please let me know. I'll try anything at this point.

The Ugly

I had a series of VERY bad dreams last night. They were bad enough to wake me from my sleep and I almost ended up staying up the rest of the night. Mr. mouse talked me back to sleep. I'm hoping it was a lot of negative energy being purged. Why am I so stressed? I'm headed to the gym this morning - hopefully, it'll help me unwind.

Kashi GOLEAN Go Lean Original Waffles

Dear Friends and Family,

Kashi GOLEAN Go Lean Original Waffles
Although I'll be eating cereal for the foreseeable future, these waffles are a great breakfast treat. Two of them toasted (3 points) with a tablespoon of maple syrup (1 point) makes a delicious breakfast for those days you need something different. A close friend turned me onto them, and now they're a staple in my freezer.

The concert/dinner last night was fabulous. Seal played a 10 song set:
  • The Beginning
  • Killer
  • Just Like You Said
  • Waiting for You
  • Let Me Sleep Beside You
  • Love's Divine
  • Bring It On
  • Crazy
  • Kiss From A Rose
  • Future Love Paradise
All I can say is, WOW!

Mouse Promise

Dear Friends and Family,

In case you haven't noticed, I've been in a funk lately.

This morning I did my yoga and went back to the basics - cereal and milk for breakfast. My funk has also translated itself into a 6 week weight loss plateau. Some of it must be stress related. Some of it is the weekend traveling.

So, this week, I'm going to try and be especially good about the yoga, cereal and daily water intake. Hopefully, you'll notice a more upbeat note in my posts.

House Week

Dear Friends and Family,

Today, our agent is coming over to take pictures of the mouse house. How exciting!

I'm headed out tonight to a charity dinner. How highfalutin does that sound?

It's dinner and a concert. It's free. How can I say no?

Gotta go water the shrubs and flowers before work.

Congratulations on a Job Well Done

Dear Friends and Family,

I've been following the adventures of Kyle MacDonald,
oneredpaperclip.blogspot.com, in his quest to trade a single red paper clip for a house. In the span of a year, he's accomplished just that. Hats off to him!

Things that make you go hmm...

Critter Update

Dear Friends and Family,

Mr. mouse is getting ready to crawl up into the attic again. I haven't heard anything recently, so we've agreed to take down the trap and chalk it up to over sensitive ears. I hope. Watch, Murphy's Law guarantees we find something now... He went to get his sneakers...

Drum roll, please.

And, the verdict is: trap empty, no squirrel.

Austin Trip Recap

Dear Friends and Family,

We're back. The trip to Austin was a lot of fun. Flights on Friday were non-eventful. We landed in Austin close to midnight and drove over to our hotel. We slept in and got complimentary room service breakfast the next morning. Nice!

We went to Central Market, Mr. mouse's favorite supermarket to window shop. We ended up picking up two heirloom cantaloupes, a bottle of wildflower honey and a bottle of Sabrett's Onions in Sauce. Huh? Sabrett's onions are the onions used in New York City push carts on hot dogs and it's a taste I grew up with. I can't wait to try them. Mr. mouse is going to hunt down some new hot dogs, as well, based on a
NY Times article I read. I'll let you know what I learn.

The ceremony itself was good. I had never been to an Eagle Scout Court of Honor before. Getting to catch up with everyone afterwards was fabulous! I can't wait until the mouse house is a thing of the past. We'll have weekends free to visit all of our friends instead of the never ending list of stuff that needs to be done.

They catered in
Salt Lick for dinner. I was good with portion control and resisted the ribs and sausage. The brisket and chicken were so yummy. I forgot how much I love the stuff. We also picked up fajitas and tamales from Pappasito's to bring back home with us.

Mr. mouse wanted to visit Waterloo Records before heading to the hotel. He also had a craving for
Amy's Ice Cream. At Waterloo, we discovered GIANT Uglydolls. How could we resist? We got Babo, Wage and Tray. We're such geeks.

This morning's flight was uneventful. We've got an afternoon of chores ahead of us, but that's okay. Taking yesterday off was definitely worth it. We're so proud of our neighbor. He's grown from a little kid into a wonderful young man. I was so happy for him yesterday. It was also the first chance he had to catch up with Mr. mouse since we had moved last July.

Hope your weekend was as much fun as ours.

Heaven #1, Heaven #2, Heaven #3

Dear Friends and Family,

Last night Trixie and I went over to a friend's house for dinner. We went out for dinner, a delicious Neapolitan pizza with salad - heaven #1. And, then walked back to his place to catch up. He's got raspberry bushes in the backyard and I went berrying for the first time. It was so much fun. The berries are SO good fresh off the bush, I confess to eating several while picking - heaven #2. Hmm... I wonder if we can grow them at the mouse pad... Built a toasty fire, and the three of us just vegged in front of it. I love fires... And, to top it all off, s'mores. They're surprisingly not too bad for you if you use good chocolate - heaven #3.

I left feeling great with a bag full of food - leftover pizza, raspberries and (don't ask) a container of yogurt for my breakfast this morning.

Don't ask how or why, but I got into a big ole fight with Mr. mouse on the way home. What is wrong with us?!?! This time over what to get our neighbor for his Eagle Scout Court of Honor gift. I guess I have a ton of baggage from growing up and he just hit the right chord. But, I don't think it's that simple. Definitely something to think about, because that makes four fights in the past week all over completely inconsequential topics. Next weekend, we have friends visiting at the mouse pad. Maybe, the weekend after, we should take a day to ourselves and try to talk through everything. Or, maybe I need to do some navel gazing. Sadly, I think this is more about my issues than anything Mr. mouse is contributing to. Mea culpa.

Tea, yogurt, and some of those fabulous berries from last night - then, I'm off to the gym with my workout buddy. See you Sunday.

Thursday Morning

Dear Friends and Family,

One of my friends came over last night and went up into the attic to check for squirrel. No sign of one. I'll have to keep close ear out for it.

I slept in this morning and feel much better than yesterday. I went over to my neighbors for dinner last night and it was good to get out of the house-only grind and talk with them. They made a fabulous dinner of grilled salmon and Irish salad. They have a bike for me, so I need to go buy a helmut so I can try out riding. I haven't ridden a bike since I was nine. It will be fun. I can't wait.

One of my neighbors passed away earlier this year. She was seventeen. Last night, I think I finally realized she was gone and not coming back. I miss her. When we talk about her, I see a lot of me, when I was a teenager, in her. I wish she was here for me to tell her that.

Squirrels

Dear Friends and Family,

We set up a trap for our attic resident and it's been all quiet up there. Until now. I hear something up there and it sounds like it's trying to get out.

Guess Mr. mouse needs to come over tonight to deal with it. Like I need any more stress in my life right now.

Mea Culpa

Dear Friends and Family,

I'm debating deleting yesterday's post. Getting together with friends is an integral part of my life and I don't want anyone to think I don't enjoy it whole-heartedly because I do.

Bad mood instigator #1: I kinked up my back Monday night. #2: I stepped on the scale Tuesday morning and found out I gained 1.5 lbs over the weekend in Indy. #3: House anxiety, what if the realtors all agree, the house isn't worth what we think it is? #4: Mismatched to do lists with Mr. mouse (please see yesterday's rant). #5: We missed our neighborhood barbecue working on the house. Result: a huge blow-up late at night over where the toothbrushes go.

Today, I need to put all that behind me. And, put the lack of sleep behind me. Tonight we have the third agent coming over. Tomorrow night is my manicure and gift shopping for the weekend. Friday, we're headed to Austin for my neighbors Eagle Scout Court of Honor. I'm so proud of him.

Time for tea and work. Wish me luck getting back into the work routine.

Trader Joe's Fruit Floes, Strawberry

Dear Friends and Family,

House update: I'm in clean up mode, Mr. mouse is in sanding down the bathroom mode. My honeydew list for him: weed, mow, water. His agenda: new Venetian plaster and glaze for the hall bathroom. It's enough to make a girl drink! It is what it is. You take the good with the bad. I'll clean tomorrow on my own. I am seriously considering outsourcing cleaning.

Realtor update: Agent #2, Pete, came over today to look at the house. I had a much better experience. He was within $5K of our initial estimate. Much better. Even with the 6% fee, it's still a better deal than Agent #1. Tomorrow, we get our third estimate and make a decision from there.

Trader Joe's Fruit Floes
(Better picture coming soon to a blog near you, if I find the time.) Summer time eating is like navigating a mine field. Once you get past the hamburgers, hot dogs, brats; you hit the potato salad, deviled eggs, chips and dip. If you make it past all those while negotiating beer, wine and cocktails, there's dessert that some well-meaning guest always brings... ice cream, cake, pie, brownies... the list goes on... Well, Trader Joe's has an alternative that we always bring to summer get togethers. The Fruit Floes are fruit flavored ices. The strawberry ones are two points a bar, making it possible to enjoy a sweet treat with friends and family without busting the "food point bank."

Indianapolis Weekend Recap

Dear Friends and Family,

We're back home after a quick trip to Indianapolis.

We spent Saturday morning assembling the deck furniture and got into Indianapolis Saturday evening. My sister cooked a fabulous dinner - pork tenderloin, potatoes and broccoli. I was in "hungry" mode so I had a second dinner afterwards. Pork tenderloin sandwich, anyone?

Sunday morning, we headed out to the race. It was a blistering hot day, 91° and no breeze. The first corner is always exciting and I had my eyes glued to the first four cars as they battled it out for the lead. So I missed the seven car pile-up that happened right in front of our seats. My favorite driver, Kimi Raikkonen, was involved in the tangle and was out for the rest of the race. The rest of the race was predictable, and my second favorite driver, Michael Schumacher, won.

We took my sister out for dinner Sunday night to celebrate her birthday. Mr. mouse went back Sunday night after dinner to go to work today. I stayed over to catch up with my sister and boy am I glad I did...

My sister dropped me off at the airport this morning. I went through security and walked to my gate. Nothing out of the norm so far. They call for standbys; I get my seat assignment. Then, they call boarding and I notice that there's a larger khaki contingent than normal. I'm like... hmm... I guess the prep look is really back... Wow! They're also all wearing the EXACT same shoes... Okay... something's not quite right with this picture... they must be here together... Yes! I spy a logo. It's the Toyota racing team. Score: 1, for mouse's deductive logic.

I end up seated next to one of the engineers and we spent the whole flight talking about his life on a F1 team. I had so much fun, it was unreal.

Mr. mouse and I were at the airport later to come back home and we saw them all again, headed to their gate to go back to Germany. We had a blast playing I spy the engineer - after all, they're pretty recognizable in khakis, white shirts and MATCHING shoes. Ah... the little things that make my day.

Toyota F1 Team Shoes

I also learned that, contrary to popular belief, not all F1 drivers have private jets. Some fly on commercial flights just like you and me. Now, how cool would it be to run into one of them on my next vacation? Sigh.

Rockets Red Glare

Dear Friends and Family,

In a surprising repeat of my last weekend at the mouse pad, Mr. mouse picked me up at the airport. We went for Korean food for dinner (I've had a bizarre craving). And, then, we went to Target to pick up more deck furniture. It's on clearance as they get ready for back to school - 30% off. Got home, went upstairs, and relaxed.

People were setting off fireworks, and we were able to enjoy them from the rooftop. Nice!

Today we're off to Indianapolis. I'm not sure if I'll have a chance to post tomorrow or Monday. Otherwise, see you on Tuesday morning.

I saw the cutest little bag on the plane yesterday. Now, you and I know, I am not a bag kinda girl, but, it was so cute I asked the person where she got it. Well, I'm gonna have to venture into a Talbot's to see if they still carry the bag. Wish me luck. I'm also bidding on it on eBay, but that one's white and I like the natural colored one more.
